It was cold and rainy as we left the college, walking down to the Strong Farm. We had been through a few challenges of finding someone to interview. We first decided that we were going to choose a couple, both husband and wife, separate them into two rooms and we both would ask the same questions and compare their answers. That was our first challenge, getting the interview. Our next challenge didn’t come too far along after. A friend told us about Burton Strong and his wife and so we decided to go ahead. We then looked in the phone book and to our surprise; there were several Strong, Burton. So we went with our first instinct and left a long message about Black River Voices and our interview and the process hoping that we would get a return phone call. It turned out, we had the wrong Strong. So back to the phone book we went. We called the next Strong and we had a winner. But, let’s get back to the walk down and challenges. We were leaving the school and on the way to the farm. In the rain and cold, we walked to the Strong’s Farm. Now, there is a house next to the Strong Farm, in which we assumed was their house. So we walked around the farm and knocked on each door thinking that someone would answer. Already making us late, we decided; let’s try those houses across the road. It was worth a shot and we went to the first house on the right and finally got the Strong’s we wanted. Still raining, we walked through the door to meet Mr. Burton Strong. The house was just as I pictured it would be. Lightly colored carpets, pictures lined up along the walls of children and grandchildren, as well as Penelope, the collie mix who thought we were there to see her, greeting us at the door. There was a warm and welcoming smell in the air. Mr. Strong greeted us and we sat on the couches. They were firm, but ever so clean and each had their own place. In the background, we heard the wind chimes throughout the interview. He began with schooling, farming and then went to marriage and stories of folks from the town. We came looking for a husband and a wife telling stories, but soon after the interview started, we had a different concept. It turned into a history; A Strong History...
